The Doane College major in Journalism and Media

Welcome to Doane's Journalism and Media Department, where students report on U.S. Presidential Inaugurations in Washington, D.C., travel to media conventions across the country, produce television and radio shows and publish the student newspaper, yearbook and a news Web site.

The Journalism and Media Department believes in the rigorous academic pursuit of excellence coupled with the fun of experiential learning. Our Journalism and Media major prepares students to gather news and information and distribute it in all formats - broadcast, online and print. Students who are editors, station managers and multimedia coordinators get paid for performing those jobs.

Since the major requires just 33 credits, students have the freedom to steep themselves in traditional liberal arts courses that emphasize critical thinking skills required in the industry or double major or minor.

As part of the major, students enjoy hands-on learning while working for on-campus media. They also take off-campus trips, where they learn to cover news. In addition to covering the last three U.S. Presidential Inaugurations in Washington, D.C., including the inauguration of Barack Obama, students have attended national college media conventions and researched the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama.

Journalism and Media classes typically are small. Many have 12 or fewer students, allowing them the chance to work closely with professors.

Internships are required of Journalism and Media majors. Students have interned at local newspapers, radio and television stations and for news organizations outside of Nebraska, such as NBC News in New York City, the White House Communications Department, the American Cancer Society, the Nebraska School Activities Association, Sandhills Publishing, the Nebraska Baseball Association, USA Track & Field and others.
