About the Major

Program Offerings

The demands of international commerce, as well as the increasing number of individuals in the U.S. who speak English as a learned language, define the need for professionals who can speak multiple languages. At Doane, students are immersed in their language major to attain a high level of proficiency and a well-rounded education in other cultures.

German Major

Beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in German are offered in such areas as German civilization, literature, composition, conversation, language enrichment and directed studies.

Study Abroad

Doane REQUIRES all language majors to study abroad for a semester, one of only a few institutions nationally that do so.

  • German majors study in Germany for one or two semesters. Doane has a consortium agreement with the Goethe Institut, where students can receive up to 24 credits. Course work can also be combined with internships abroad.

Double Major

Students are strongly encouraged to combine a language major with another major at Doane, in any of the college's disciplines such as sociology, biology, business administration, English, education, or another foreign language.

Approximately 30-35 students are in the program each year, with 8-10 studying abroad during the year.
