German

Studying a foreign language has become increasingly relevant in today’s world, with the emphasis on internationalism and the ready access to travel and contact with people from other nations.  Students interested in studying German will find that the opportunity to acquire proficiency in this language will enhance their understanding of their role as a part of the global community.  Research has found a positive correlation between the study of another language and cognitive abilities in many other fields of study.  To paraphrase a common saying, “the person who speaks another language is worth two people.”

The German faculty provides many experiences both within and outside of the classroom for authentic practice of the new language.  All language majors are required to spend at least one semester studying abroad in a country where that language is spoken.  This ensures that both language and cultural competencies are strengthened to reinforce what is learned in class.

In order to help lead students to success, the following are highlights of the German Department:

  • Major or minor in German.
  • Majors spend a semester in Germany; optional for minors.
  • Language study improves general cognitive development.
  • Major or minor ties in with many other fields of study.
  • Internships are available during semester in Germany.
  • Doane German students have been recipients of many Fulbright scholarships.
  • Small classes provide more opportunity for oral practice.
  • German Club provides leadership opportunities.
  • An extensive Library collection of German language books, periodicals and movies.
