Special Education

Doane's special education major leads to preparation for teaching children and youth with mild or moderate mental handicaps, learning disabilities or behavioral disorders. Teachers graduating from this program have certification for teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. Students may obtain certification in both elementary education and special education.

The Doane College Education Program is known nationwide for its innovative, performance-based approach to teacher education based on a quality model of theory and developmental experiences.

Course Requirements

Requirements for the special education major include:

  • seven courses in special education level 200-400
  • special education may be combined with elementary education, early childhood education, or English as a second language in a four-year experience
  • field placements are designed to provide hands-on experiences with students with a variety of handicapping conditions
  • major leads to an endorsement in K-12 mild/moderate special education
