African Adventure

African Adventure

Professor Betty Levitov leads students on a three-week tour of Africa visiting Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar.  The trip includes:

  • A three-day safari to the Masai Mara National Game Reserve where they will see giraffes, elephants, zebras, and many other animals with wildlife guide Isaac Kinyanjui and wildlife photographer Paul McDougal.
  • Crossing the equator along the Rift Valley to Ol'Ngarua to live in an African village, experiencing shopping at the local markets, gathering vegetables from farms and preparing and cooking meals.
  • A visit to Thompson Falls, schools, churches, orphanages and farms and the nearby towns of Karandi and Nyaharuru.
  • Travel to Hell's Gate National Park in the Rift Valley for a mountain bike trip into the gorge.
  • Spend a day in Nairobi for shopping, and a city tour.
  • Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Center and the Kazuri bead craft center.
  • Ferry to Zanzibar and the exotic city of Stone Town, with its fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and Swahili architecture.
  • Activities on Zanzibar also include a spice tour, snorkeling, beaches, fishing villages, viewing the famous carved wooden doors, visiting museums, tasting Swahili cuisine, and watching the dhows (ancient sailing ships) in the harbor.

If you've been before, you know the excitement, the beauty and the incredible memories this adventure provides.

Levitov took her first group of students to Africa for an interterm trip in 1996.  To get an idea of the experience, read Levitov's book Africa on Six Wheels: A Semester on Safari

Europe Biking Tour

This 14-day course involves touring three European countries by bicycle, much of it along the Danube River.

Among other sights, we are visiting two historical centers that have been UNESCO World Heritage sites; learning about Czech, German, and Austrian life; and sleeping in a 16th-century former Jesuit monastery.

We are also visiting Plav, a typical Bohemian village on the banks of a small river, eating with local families and enjoying Zlata Koruna, one of the best-preserved Gothic monasteries in Bohemia.

In addition, we're biking the largest national park in the Czech Republic, rolling through beautiful forests.  In Melk, we take a guided tour of the spectacular Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest Baroque monasteries, and eat lunch in the abbey gardens.

In Vienna, we tour famous museums, such as the Secession Building and the Kunsthistorisches.  We may also visit the riding school famous for Lipizzaner horses or check out the Hofburg Imperial Palace, which dates to 1279.

Online Posts

Depending on the availability of Internet, we intend to post regularly (we hope daily) about our exploits in Europe. We have cameras, audio recorders and a Flip video camera so we hope we can post different types of stories - print, video, audio slideshow, etc. - while on the trip. These posts will be available through our Web site: http://www.doaneline.com/special_sections/interterm/

Check back often to keep updated!
