The Doane College Board of Trustees authorized the construction of an enlarged fitness center within Butler Gym, located at the center of campus, while the college designs a new recreation and athletic center.
The summer of 2007, Doane opened a 2,450 square foot fitness center within the west side of Butler Gym that is open to all students, faculty, and staff. In addition to being conveniently located in the center of campus, the fitness center offers a significant amount of natural light, making it an inviting space for all. The fitness center includes over 20 pieces of equipment, a vast selection of free weights, cable TV and accommodations for the use of personal listening devices.
Below is a listing of the various types of equipment and electronics available:
- Treadmills
- Ellipticals (2 different models that provide varying workouts)
- Upright bike
- Recumbent bike
- Spinning bike
- Upper body machine for those who may have limited leg function
- 5-50 lb. weights
- Weight bench
- Stretching floor mats
- Cubbies for personal items
- Flat Screen TVs throughout
- Wireless receivers at each station to hear the TVs

The Recreation and Athletic Center
The college is also designing an entirely new recreation and athletic center.
This facility, when completed, will include a 9,000 square foot fitness center, a new gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a regulation 200 meter track.
The center has the potential to be built in three separate phases.
The college has secured a $5 million dollar gift toward this project and fundraising is ongoing.
